Tom Benitez is a visual journalist based in the Orlando area of Florida, whose work has been published in national and international publications.
His news, sports and features photos have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Boston Globe, Time Magazine, LA Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, and NPR. His work included Orlando Magic games, the Citrus Bowl, Orlando City Soccer games, Solar Bears hockey, the Blue Rhino gas plant explosion, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, as well as numerous breaking, local, and national news.
Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Benitez grew up in New York where he started his career printing the work of some of the top photographers, while working at a custom lab. After relocating to Florida, he worked as a wedding and commercial photographer.
In 1990, Benitez took a job as a lab technician at the Orlando Sentinel, a job he saw as a foot in the door to his dream of becoming a photojournalist. Benitez went on to shoot photos and video for news and sports events in the Orlando area for 25 years, before retiring and becoming a freelancer.
He lives with his wife and son in Mount Dora.
